CALIFORNIA BALLOT INITIATIVES: There are some very significant measures on the ballot, and since not that many people show up for midterm elections like today, your vote matters! Prop 1 [water infrastructure improvements]: No. Water improvements shouldn’t be paid out of general tax funds. Pay for what you use. 80% of the supply is used by agriculture. Prop 2 [Rainy day fund]: Yes. Smoothes crazy state level budgeting process over the years. Prop 45 [health insurance rate approval authority] : NOO! Silly new position in charge of approving rates. Written by people with zero understanding of economics. Covered California is doing a decent job increasing true competition in the dysfunctional insurance market. This will accomplish nothing except hurting that effort. Prop 46 [quadruples cap on pain & suffering lawsuits, and doctor drug testing]: No. This should not be dealt with by proposition, regardless of whether you think its good policy. The legislature should be left with these items. Prop 47 [Sentencing reductions]: Yes? In some cases these might go a little too far, in terms of our sensibilities for justice, but the prison system is so ridiculously overcrowded, this will be a good thing. The “tough on crime” laws of decades past went way too far, and sweeping remedies are needed, but legislators are scared of the attack ads theyll face the instant one person let out early does something bad. Thats why a ballot initiative makes sense to me here. Prop 48 [Casino built outside of native american lands]: No. Please, no further legal carve-outs for native tribes. This makes a special exception for one tribe. Alright, go vote. And look up your local level politicians. They have far more power than you think, and face almost no scrutiny from us. *tagging some random friends in CA*
