CALIFORNIA FF DIES IN THE LINE OF DUTY-Wildland Operations We regret to advise you that a Firefighter was killed in the Line of Duty at the Saddle Back Fire in the South Warner Wilderness, Modoc National Forest, northeastern CA. Yesterday, FF Luke Sheehy 28, of the US Forest Service, serving as a Redding Smokejumper, was killed. Just before 1700 hours, 3 Redding Smokejumpers jumped a small initial attack lightning fire --- the Saddle Back Fire --- in the rugged South Warner Wilderness area, about a mile and a half southeast of the Soup Springs Campground. One of the three, FF Luke Sheehy was hit in the head by a tree limb that fell more than 60 feet before striking him. Efforts to resuscitate Luke were not successful. He was flown by helicopter to a hospital in Alturas where he was pronounced dead. Our condolences to all affected. RIP Prayers for his Families.
