CALL FOR APPLICATIONS International Summer School on “Governance, Conflict and Peace-Building” for Pak- Afghan Graduate Students September 1-15, 2014. Bara Gali Summer Campus of the University of Peshawar Department of Political Science at the University of Peshawar in collaboration with Hanns Seidel Foundation, Islamabad is pleased to invite applications from M.A./M.Phil/ Ph.D students of Universities of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Afghanistan for the summer school to be held in Bara Gali, the summer Campus of the University of Peshawar from September 1-15, 2014. The Summer School intends to focus on Governance, Conflict and Peace-Building in the Pak- Afghan region. Inter-twined in complex patterns, these processes are closely knitted together and change in one dimension unleashes transformation in all the three. Poor governance serves as a root cause of conflict as well as an obstacle to peace-building. Pakistan and Afghanistan, the two neighboring countries, are clustered together in a regional set-up, where war and conflict in one state has resonated in the form of extremism, militancy, violence, loss of political legitimacy and economic depredation in the other. The sharing of a common border, history and culture results in an interdependency of national stability, where both the states share common stakes in peace, conflict resolution and good governance. In the wake of the international intervention to rebuild the Afghan state in post 2001 this mutual dependency for creating a peaceful region has even starker been shown. A nuance understanding of how such state building has unraveled in Afghanistan, as well as in what manner Pakistan’s governance and security issues are hampering peace building in the region are highly critical in understanding the dilemmas faced by the Pak-Afghan region. Strategies and solutions for a peaceful region especially in the context of the two vital states need to be appreciated in the light of the current security and strategic situation in the region. Post 2014 is promising to herald a new beginning for peace and state building in the region. However, the withdrawal of international forces from the region are also posing new sets of challenges for both the states in terms of improving governance and building peace based on indigenous solutions and resources. The Summer School organized at Bara Gali aims to give students and scholars the possibility to interact, discuss and exchange ideas on the nexus between peace building, conflict resolution and good governance in the region. It endeavours to apprise, educate and train youth of Pakistani and Afghan Universities about resolving issues that complicate relations between the two countries, with emphasis on how peace-building may be initiated on a regional forum through enhanced trade and confidence building measures. It will enable the participants to apply the knowledge of the theoretical framework received in the Summer School to their own situations, ranging from micro (individual/family) to macro (state) level. The approach of the program will be interactive and participants are expected to learn not only from the resource persons but also from each other by sharing their own experiences. Along with the academic sessions, other activities will also be a part of the program. These include group meal, games, campfire/cultural nights, hiking to the nearby tourist resorts, visits to some government and nongovernment institutes/offices and sightseeing ventures. Participants will be provided transport, accommodation and food during the summer school. Required reading will be provided to the participants before the formal start of the school and each participant is expected to study these readings and contribute enthusiastically to each session in the Summer School. Students from Social Sciences particularly Political Science, Sociology, Area Studies, Anthropology, International Relations and History are encouraged to apply.
