CALL TO ACTION!! Here is a great opportunity to make a difference in our community today. This is an important vote for Affordable Housing happening Wednesday and we need your help! At Wednesdays City Council meeting, Commissioners will decide whether or not to use a new, ongoing funding stream to build more affordable housing in Portland: Commissioners Saltzman and Fish have introduced a proposal to use 100% of the Citys new revenue from short-term rentals [e.g. Airbnb - see below] to build affordable housing. We need one more Commissioner to join them in voting YES on Wednesday. This means we need you to take action NOW. TAKE ACTION NOW: CONTACT: Mayor Charlie Hales: 503-823-4120, [email protected] Commissioner Amanda Fritz: 503-823-3008, [email protected] Commissioner Steve Novick: 503-823-4682, [email protected] TELL THEM: I am counting on YOU to support affordable housing at the City Council meeting on Wednesday -- by voting to dedicate 100% of the new revenue from short-term rentals to the Housing Investment Fund. Our city is experiencing a housing crisis. Working families, elders and other Portlanders of modest means are being priced out of the city. The revenue from short-term rentals is not enough to solve the problem, but it is an important first step. We need dedicated, ongoing revenue to create affordable housing. The growing popularity of short-term rentals, such as AirBnB, threatens to remove housing from the regular market. This would displace current residents and make housing even more expensive. The revenue coming from these short-term rentals must be used to counteract this threat by building affordable housing. More information on short-term rentals & affordable housing Last week, City Council decided to collect hotel/lodging taxes from short-term vacation rentals (e.g. Airbnb). On Wednesday, Commissioners will decide whether or not to dedicate this new revenue to the Citys Housing Investment Fund, which goes to build and maintain housing that is affordable to families earning 60% or less of the areas median income. This is brand new revenue that will NOT take existing funds away from other priorities. news.streetroots.org/2014/07/23/organizations-call-100-short-term-rental-fee-go-toward-affordable-housing
