....CALLING A SPADE A BIG SPOON..... Just woken up this morning, far away kiasi from home and all I can hear from a distance is the echo of the #NyumbaKumi initiative debate. The NyumbaKumi thing is expected to stem insecurity. It appears to be among the top midweeks trending issue in Kenya. Infact it is indeed very healthy when people take a central role in talking about what affects them in a democratic country, this is what I would call active participation. Kwanza kabisa I respect opinion of others and their respective view points, that is why I also give mine when it is hard to resist doing so. The opposition party or coalition party in Kenya has refused to share a bed with the NyumbaKumi initiative....even if they have made any convincing attempts to support their rejection of the initiative, am not certain that they have given an alternative other than complaining about incidents of insecurity in the country. If one would take time to observe...their statements at times tend to come immidiately after something wrong has happened, not far away from their doorsteps. They most of the time are likely to use such incidents as case studies to launch their attacks on what they would wish to disagree with and in the end offer no tangible alternatives. A change of tact on this approach can bring a new redemption day to the world of the present opposition politics in Kenya. I wonder why they would reject it without proper explanations. Having been born and brought up just near where the idiea of NyumbaKumi might have been procured from and having interacted with friends and inlaws with some of their roots in the neighbouring Tanzania, it is my humble submission that the idea can work as part of a host of other interventions against insecurity. If well executed....the idea can promote good neighbourhoods that are in touch with self and others. The Nyumba kumi or #KumiNaTano could be used flush out criminals who run away from their areas after commiting crime. It is a much more organized and manageable way to effective community policing. I agree that all that has a good side would also have a negative side. The #NyumbaKumi in TZ has for example not been so much able to discourage some criminal elements from using panya routes in their villages to run away from the hands of security agents in Kenya. The same routes are used as transit points for stolen cars, motor bikes and game meat...etc. Disadvantages should however not be used to discourage workable initiatives.... We can as an advanced nation in our region make use of the best practices and strengthen the possible weak points in the #Nyumba kumi thing for a secure Kenya. I do not find anything wrong in believing in +ve possibilities. lET US GIVE THE NYUMBA10 initiative a chance! Kwani unaogopa jirani? E&OE
