CALLING RAPT FAMILY: Short version- I’m creating a collage of memories for rapt.fm. if rapt.fm has effected you in some way, please let me know via email at [email protected] Longer version— 2.5 years ago, we started rapt.fm with the thought that: 1) We’d make a passionate community around freestyle rapping where people of all skill levels would kick rhymes together and 2) we’d make a lot of money and run it forever. For a ton of reasons — of which i’ll write about soon -- #2 didn’t happen, and we gotta do something else to make a living tho we’re open if people have ideas + want to get formally involved. #1 DID happen though, and sustaining that is paramount. the rapt community will continue to run as is, tho we’ll have some changes upcoming. (wed also like to hear from you guys - what would you like to see to keep the community strong?) We’re going to explain what led to this point, the struggles faced and the lessons learned, and describe the evolution in detail, but that’s’ for a future post. *** For 2.5 years rapt has been my life + identity. it’s given me new friends, strengthened relationships with old ones, and has brought me moments of inexplicable joy. In a business sense it’s on hold but the community will live on forever. we don’t intend to stop spreading the good word, in person and online, about freestyling. There’s something freestyle about it that allows you to tap into truths you couldn’t otherwise, because the freestyle is made for the exact people around you and for that exact moment. True, maybe not a lot of thought went into it, or, alternatively, maybe your whole life’s thought went into it and you couldn’t have even known what you thought until you delved deep into your subconscious and unearthed the truth therein. And yet - what’s amazing about freestyling is also it’s biggest drawback: since it’s so in the moment - it doesn’t have lasting effect. it’s not scalable. its very nature is to be experienced in the moment. Conversely, a pop rap song, however manufactured and devoid of truth it can be, can be appreciated over and over by millions. A freestyle can only be really appreciated by those who were there in the moment. Even if you do hear its after the fact, it’s not as meaningful. Sadly, altho perhaps a million battles have happened on our site, barely any were recorded to see today - and none can really do justice to the moments of excitement, #bars, and outright craziness that occurred on rapt.fm I don’t want us to lose those memories. So. i’d like to collect collage of rapt.fm experiences, memories, and friendships. If rapt has touched you in some way - if you’ve learned how to rap or if you’ve sharpened your craft, if you made some friends or felt less alone, if you have any memory you want to talk about - i’d love to hear about it — please email me at [email protected]. it can be a sentence or a paragraph or a page. As a token of my appreciation, if you do so, i’d like to give you a free, limited edition rapt t-shirt (i only have 20 left - depending on how many respond i’ll try to order more) *** The platform is OK but you guys deserve better. maybe one day we’ll have the resources to give the world the rapping platform it deserves. in the meantime there will be plenty of cyphers + battles in person and online. There’s a lot behind the scenes that has happened the past 6 months that i’d like to share with you guys. Again, a more expansive writing coming in the next couple weeks — and i hope to include some of your answers (anonymously if you allow me) - to make this, like rapt.fm was for the longest time, a community project. - T-Berg
