CALTRANS CLIMBING COURSE CONSIDERED THE ONLY TRAINING OF ITS KIND - TopicsExpress

CALTRANS CLIMBING COURSE CONSIDERED THE ONLY TRAINING OF ITS KIND IN THE NATION Each year, approximately 180 employees attend climbing courses at the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) Kingvale Training Academy located near Truckee, CA. The courses originally began in 1988 in San Luis Obispo, CA (District 5) and are considered the only training of their kind in the nation. Climbers from many other transportation agencies have asked to participate our courses to learn Caltrans techniques in this unique environment. Employees use the specialized training to perform work, such as; avalanche control, rock-scaling operations, surveying, construction inspection, geotechnical investigations, tower work, and culvert inspection. Classes range from beginner to advanced, as well as a train-the-trainers that is offered only to highly experienced climbers and has a more rigorous program requirement. Caltrans has 39 trainers in its program. Of those, 3 instructors are located in Redding, CA (District 2). Instructors are chosen based on their ability to demonstrate and perform advanced techniques, which can be very intense and requires a high level of responsibility for less experienced climbers. Over 2,000 employees have passed the climbing program since its inception without incident. Thank you to all of our Caltrans climbers who serve the public every day under dangerous conditions so that we can all travel safely!
