CAMARADAS EL BARRIO CELEBRATES TEN YEARS OF NUYORICAN AND CARIBBEAN CULTURE IN SPANISH HARLEM August 6, 2014 (New York, New York) – Camaradas El Barrio, the Nuyorican pub famous for its mofongo, jíbaro sandwiches, cutting-edge art exhibits, killer sangrías, and some of the best live music and DJ sessions in the New York Latino scene, is celebrating 10 years since it opened its doors in Spanish Harlem. From Monday, August 11th, through Sunday, August 17th, the performance and exhibition lineup (details below) will serve as a testament to the cultural and social foundry this small bar/ restaurant in El Barrio has become. Even before the revelry begins, none other than music legend Eddie Palmieri dropped in to grace this cultural watering hole. “That was truly a blessing, to me personally, and to everything we’ve been building here these last ten years,” said owner/manager Orlando Plaza. This rustic style, worker’s public house where camaraderie is built, has engaged the surrounding community’s cultural and artistic energy since officially opening on August 12, 2004 by having its walls serve as a rotating gallery for flourishing and established talent from the New York City and international art scenes. The 10th Anniversary Art Exhibit will feature Rigo Peralta’s, “Sacrifice”, a painting that inspired the dialogue to create Camaradas. The performance stage in the rear of the pub has provided space to help continue this neighborhood’s rich tradition of world-class live music and DJ sessions. The kitchen of Camaradas, currently under Chef David Steven, has kept true to the Spanish Harlem folklore as well. The menu has balanced Caribbean cuchifrito and Spanish-style tapas with plates and platters of Puerto Rican and American pub cuisine. And in quenching the thirsty populace, the bar section of Camaradas has truly become the stuff of legend. Many American craft beers have been introduced to this part of the city through Camaradas’ taps. And yes, the sangria legend is true (proceed with caution). A treasured rum selection along with other fine spirits, and a inspired cocktail menu rounds out the offerings that have kept residents and visitors alike returning to this “AmeRícan” pub for 10 years.
