CAMPAIGN AGAINST FDI HIKE INTENSIFIES PROMINENT CITIZENS WRITE TO FM Prominent personalities from different walks of life have aired their opposition to the decision of BJP led NDA government to secure approval of the Insurance Laws (Amendment) Bill to hike FDI limit to 49% and privatise GIC and the four public sector general insurance companies. The legendary struggle of the AIIEA against FDI hike that began in 2004 has now entered a critical phase. It is a matter of great pride that except the hired pen pushers and vested interests representing the big business, the majority of our people have disapproved this decision. They fully agree with the AIIEA that the FDI hike will help the multinational corporations to gain greater access and control over the domestic savings and this is not in the interests of the national economy. This decision has totally exposed the double standards and political opportunism of the BJP; the “U” turn on FDI hike in insurance from vociferous opposition to open arm welcome is to appease and meet the demands of the global finance capital. It is becoming absolutely clear that the BJP led NDA is obliged to meet these demands as a payback for the unprecedented funds and support received from the big business and global finance capital during the General Elections 2014. The AIIEA which successfully halted the FDI hike for 10 years and privatization of public sector insurance for the last 20 years has decided to fight this government move resolutely. It is mobilizing the opinion of the people in favour of its struggle. The AIIEA has written to 35 national and regional recognized political parties to oppose the FDI hike in the national interests. The AIIEA has received positive response from some of these parties. As more people are mobilized, the other parties will also come forward to support this struggle. The AIIEA has also written to all the Central Trade Unions. Many of the Central Trade Unions have expressed support to our struggle. Till now, more than 2700 prominent citizens from across the country have written to the Finance Minister. They include former parliamentarians, retired judges of Supreme Court and other courts, eminent economists, freedom fighters, Jnanapeet Award Winners, leading jurists and from the field of arts, literature and social activists. In a democracy, the opinion of such wide sections of the Indian people should be heard and respected. With each passing day, this number is bound to increase. The names of some eminent persons who have demanded the finance minister to drop this ill-conceived measure are published herebelow. Such support should motivate and encourage to further step up our campaign. The AIIEA has also approached all the other unions in the industry for a One Day Protest Strike if the government succeeds in securing the approval of the Bill utilizing its brute majority. The AIIEA is very clear in its understanding that global finance capital will not rest content with 49 percent FDI. They will continue the pressure to remove all restrictions. Therefore, it is necessary to give a strong message through the One Day Strike so that the resistance of the insurance employees to such measures would continue without any let up. The aim of the private and foreign capital is finally to destroy the public sector and the BJP led NDA government is an accomplice to this conspiracy. The public sector insurance industry is built by our sweat and toil and we cannot allow the enemies to destroy these fine financial institutions.
