CAMPAIGN SONGS – BEWARE OF THEIR LONG TERM EFFECTS What is common in all campaign songs are the praises they shower on candidates and the supposed abilities the latter have necessary to deal with the office they are seeking. Without thought, we sometimes jump on the bandwagon shaking to the music and singing along. When the candidate realizes he or she is the man or woman of the moment, they pull themselves up in majestic style, grinning and waving to cheering crowds. Meanwhile, self-styled bodyguards who know nothing about the art and science of VIP Protection provide a human shield clumsily pushing away innocent people. While all this is happening, have you ever wondered what may be going on in the mind of the candidate? They feel a false sense of superiority and importance, if not a bit above ordinary mortals. When you inflate human ego in this fashion, you ruin their sense of reality and society pays a heavy price sooner or later. Human beings cannot bear exaltation; they grow dizzy and soon lose balance. In the case of Presidential candidates, in the event that they win the election, they soon become arrogant and lose respect for their fellow human beings. From a spiritual standpoint, they risk losing their salvation because an exalted self does not see the need for deferring to a Supreme Being. We have in times past witnessed the arrogance of power – from Kaunda to Sata: how some people were labeled “stupid idiots” while others where publicly called “ifipuba” – fools in English. This is the price the public pays by artificially inflating the importance and abilities of ordinary mortals that seek our vote. We do not depend on Presidents for our survivor, instead these brothers depend on us: we pay them a comfortable salary, providing them with free housing, allowing them to beat traffic lights without ever paying traffic fines, their kitchens are ever filled with all kinds of necessities, and their health needs are taken care of at great expense. My fellow Zambians, devise an appropriate attitude towards these men and women for their sake and the sake of Mother Zambia.
