CAN A PLANE CRASH DUE TO TURBULENCE? Heavy turbulence can cause the aircraft to crash for many reasons. As you mention - the plane could lose lift Also the engines could stall and flame out There have been several cases where aircraft structurally failed - i.e. wings or other components broke off the plane. Many of these were military aircraft in combat or combat training. Now most of those have happened decades in the past. The aircraft designers and pilots have learned a lot. How to better predict aircraft stresses, how to design the aircraft to handle the stresses better. Also how to fly the plane better in rough conditions - how to manage speed and stresses better. Aircraft owners - especially airlines - also are much more aware that an airframe exposed to heavy stresses may need more careful checks, may no longer be as reliable and safe as one not exposed to those stresses. If anyone could build a plane strong enough that it could not be structurally destroyed by turbulence - it would look like a battleship. NW lost a 720B a few minutes after take offf at MIA Feb of 1963 BN lost a One-11 in southeast Nebraska in Aug of 1966 BN lost an L-188 near Dawson, Texas May 1968.. Those are a few turbulance related crashes in the USA where mother nature tore an airplane apart.
