CAN IPENZ RESTORE TRUST IN ENGINEERS? We all know how important engineers are in the rebuild of Christchurch and we certainly know some good ones, but trust in this profession has, in general, been rocked to the core in Christchurch. Everything from the failure of the CTV building and the council checks following the September 2010 earthquake, EQCs engineers who swear hand on heart that everything is historical damage , to examples of bizarre decision making such as restored section of Fitzgerald Avenue that is now programmed to flood regularly. Were not sure what IPENZ has been doing the last few years in terms of reining people in but at least they seem to be acknowledging short-comings now. The government also needs to change legislation to give them some bite if confidence in the profession is to be restored.
