CAN THE ADVERTISING TRUMP NEGATIVE PR? It was announced in the media today that the Federal Government is launching an advertising campaign to promote the proposed changes to higher education funding arrangements – that they call reforms This raises a big question for me: - Will this campaign have a positive impact beyond the negatives associated with a government spending money on advertising and in so doing risking looking like they have double standards? Prior to the last election the federal Government voiced objection to political advertising and criticized the then federal government for such advertising. Indeed, one of the major critics was man who is now Minister for Education The current opposition is now highly critical of the Federal Government for the current campaign, and this message is being eagerly communicated by the media at every opportunity – despite (or perhaps because) the fact that all governments act in this way Indeed the questions regarding the ethics of this campaign and the apparent double standards of the Minister and Government is now well and truly in the public forum. It is being discussed widely How much will need to be spent to overcome the negative impact of the campaign before any gains will be made? In my view – A LOT! Could a positive result been achieved with much less expense and without the negative media coverage negating the investment in the campaign. In my view – MOST DEFINITELY! Having said all of this, the impact of the advertising will never be known. The advertising agency certainly has that fact working for it The fact is, this is a lazy approach to achieving the Governments objectives! The fact is, we will never know if it was money well spent!
