CANADA ALBERTA PROVINCE WANT BOTH MORE FOREIGN WORKERS AND SCRAPPING OF IMMIGRATION CAP AND WILL NEED 96000 WORKERS BY 2023 Alberta wants more workers, wants Ottawa to end immigration cap The immigration program in Canada allows each province to nominate only a set number of economic immigrants for permanent residency. Alberta told a press conference Monday they need more than allowed and have requested the cap be dropped. Removing cap from immigration Alberta Jobs Minister Ric McIver told the media that he has sent a letter to federal Citizenship and Immigration Minister Chris Alexander telling him that the provinces needs are not being met by the quota as it stands. He wants the ceiling removed. I would like the federal government to take the cap off of the maximum number of provincial nominees that we can appoint so that we can bring in the people that we need, McIver told media Monday. We think we are going to be 96,000 workers short by 2023 and most of those skilled and good-paying jobs. Alberta was allotted 5,500 economic immigrant certificates for 2014 and the minister said they have all been filled (the workers can bring family). However, not all the labor needs of the province have been filled, he said, noting Alberta believes the number allowed should be based upon the labor market and information provided by local areas, not be based on a number set in Ottawa. New Canadian immigration policy Alexander announced last month that a new federal immigration policy for 2015 will see an accent on skilled workers, a system they call express entry geared to bring more immigrants to Canada who will bring along economic benefits to the country. He said theyll bring in between 260,000 and 285,000 immigrants next year. But without the number of certificates the provinces are permitted to grant workers going up, Alberta will continue to want to exceed the quota on skilled workers they can nominate. The amount we need will change from year to year, depending on how good the economy is, whether it is up or down, McIver said. Removing the cap seems like a responsible thing to do. McIver said more workers will help all industry in his province.
