CANADA IMMIGRATION SCRAPPED PROGRAM OF GIVING $ 2000 TO EACH FAILED ASYLUM SEEKER AS MONEY AND AIRFARE FOR RETURNING TO THEIR HOME COUNTRY IF AGREED NOT TO FILE APPEAL AGAINST THE REJECTION OF REFUGEE CLAIM AND STILL CAN AVAIL MONEY UNTIL 13TH FEB 2015 THE LAST DATE AND SO FAR 3827 ASYLUM SEEKER TOOK BENEFITS UP TO 1ST DECEMBER 2014 The Canada Border Services Agency is ending a controversial pilot project that provided failed refugee claimants with money and airfare to abandon the refugee appeal process and return to their country of origin. While the program has been defended as a humane alternative to forced deportation, critics say it failed to protect people returning to the persecution that they originally fled. The Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration program was introduced in 2012 with the goal of reducing demand on CBSAs removal program by providing failed refugee claimants with money and a one-way ticket to their country of origin. Unsuccessful asylum seekers were eligible for up to $2,000 worth of in-kind reimbursement upon returning to their home country under the program, which has been administered by the International Organization for Migration since its introduction nearly three years ago. The program was limited to asylum seekers who filed claims within the Greater Toronto Area. According to an IOM notification, the cutoff for applicants from non-designated countries of origin was Dec. 19, 2014. Applicants from DCO countries have until Feb. 13 to apply for the program. CBSA spokesperson Pierre Deveau told Embassy that 3,827 low-risk failed refugee claimants have left Canada under the program as of December, 2014. The program has provided more than $4.5-million worth of in-kind financial assistance and $3.6-million in airfare to failed asylum seekers facing deportation from Canada. The agency plans to release a final report on the program later this year.
