CANTON REPOSITORY CLIP... A 26-year-old city man died from gunshot wounds to the head and upper right leg Saturday night following an argument on the city’s northwest side. William Deandre Johnson, 26, of 1022 Gibbs Ave. NE, Canton, was shot in the head and upper right leg near the intersection of Seventh Street and Brown Avenue NW, Police Chief Bruce Lawver said. Johnson died at 9:15 p.m. at Aultman Hospital. As of 11 p.m. Saturday night, police were still searching for his shooter. A K-9 tracked the suspect, a white male, to the abandoned U.S. Technology building at Tuscarawas Street and Schroyer Avenue SW. The Canton SWAT team established a perimeter around the building. Lawver said it could take several hours to clear the building. The suspect is described as having a scraggly white beard and wearing dark-colored shorts with a white tank top with light-blue stripes. “We do have some very strong investigative leads that detectives are working on as far as the suspect,” Lawver said. The city’s acoustic gunshot detection system, ShotSpotter, alerted police to the shooting. Lawver said multiple residents also reported a loud fight between the two men. He did not know a motive. Johnson’s death marks the sixth homicide in the city this year. Canton police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call the department’s detective bureau at 330-489-3144.
