CAPS FANS MOBILISING FUNDS A FEW weeks ago, CAPS United were heading for a crisis as a section of their fans mounted pressure on coach Taurai Mangwiro to quit. After CAPS United’s 4-0 destruction of Highlanders at the National Sports Stadium on Sunday, it appears the supporters’ anger towards Mangwiro has been diluted. Now the fans believe they can still claim the championship if they motivate their players and patiently stalk league champions Dynamos who are on 49 points and ZPC Kariba who are on 47. Chairman of the CAPS United Supporters Association, Harare Chapter, John Gwatiringa said they were rallying behind the team. Gwatiringa said the supporters agreed to mobilise financial resources to motivate the players in the last five matches of the season. “We met as supporters from all over the country in Chitungwiza and came up with what we called a ‘Chitungwiza Declaration.’ “The supporters agreed to raise money, through their various chapters, which should be given as incentives to motivate the players and the technical team. “We feel that there is a chance for us to win the league but we need to motivate the players and this is why we are seeking donations from our supporters,” said Gwatiringa. CAPS United’s protocol officer, Masarira “Dread” Silingwani, said every dollar raised should be receipted and accounted before being handed over to the club’s administration. “Each chapter will then hand over the money to the supporters’ national executive, who then will deliver to the admin. “The admin will use the money for the pressing needs at the club but supporters want it to be used to motivate the players in the championship race. “Every dollar will count, because a dollar can buy four bottles of water and that’s something to motivate a player, say at training,” said Silingwani.
