CAPS UNITED ARE THE ZIM CHAMPIONS BY STEVE VICKERS CAPS are Zimbabwe champions Steve Vickers BBC Sport, Harare CAPS United have won the Zimbabwean championship with three matches to spare, after a 5-1 away win over Kwekwe Cable on Wednesday. The Harare clubs chances of success had seemed slim when three key players were killed in a road accident just two games into the season. But coach Charles Mhlauri, who also manages the national team, built a strong side that has lost only one of its 27 matches so far, scoring 62 goals and conceding 17. The side was also strengthened by the signing of two Zambians, defender Laughter Chilembe and international midfielder Ian Bakala. Were dedicating this championship to our three players who lost their lives, Blessing Makunike, Shingi Alron and Gary Mashoko, said club president Twine Phiri. We want to show people that football is business and that our success came from good organisation. But the celebrations are on hold until Saturday when were playing at home, as most of our fans couldnt travel for this game. Despite their huge support base, CAPS have only won the title twice before, in 1979 and 1996. The team competed in the inaugural edition of the Champions League in 1997 but failed to reach the group stages. CAPS have the ability to put up a better performance in Africa next year but they face a serious financial challenge, in light of the countrys economic problems. Before winning the league, CAPS had already lifted one trophy this season, the Buddie League Cup. They could make it a treble if they go on to win Zifa Unity Cup. The team are in the semi- finals.
