CAREER TALK ON THE LEGAL PROFESSION - 31 May 2014 A capacity crowd filled Lecture Theatre 5 to listen to Mr LOK VI MING, Senior Counsel, speak on a career in the Legal Profession. Mr Lok gave a very engaging and interactive talk on :- I. Benefits of Studying Law II. Practice of the Law III.Nobility of the Profession Infused with humour and personal anecdotes, Mr Lok gave accounts of situations where different skills and attributes and training would be able to hold a person in good stead, even if he decided not to be a legal practitioner. Being legally trained also equipped a person in effective oral and written communications skills. The profession is one that requires wisdom, discipline, a role in society that commands respect for its contributions in all aspects of the economy, in public service, in commerce, in private relationships, in politics, and throughout society. Most of all, for its practitioners, it is a meaningful career , to have and to hold, to love and to cherish. Many participants stayed behind after the talk and the Q&A Session to interact further with Mr Lok. Feedback from participants was unanimously positive:- - One parent said that the speaker addressed the question of ethics very well, and he would encourage his child to pursue this noble profession. - One other parent said that he understood the liabilities and duties of the profession better, and how it impacts every stage of a persons life. - Another parent was gratified to find out that Singapore was the dispute resolution jurisdiction of choice for many cross-border transactions. - Yet another parent said that he understood better the prospects and challenges that a lawyer has in practising law but acknowledged how a person with legal training was sought after in many fields and industries as well. The RPA thanks Mr Lok Vi Ming, SC, for his time and forthright sharing, and all participants for your presence at the talk this morning. This is the first in the season of career talks organised by the RPA. We look forward to continued support from our members.
