CAREER TIPS : ACT LIKE A LEADER BEFORE YOU ARE ONE You can begin to act, think, and communicate like a leader long before the promotion for fancy title. Here are several ways to start laying the groundwork : 1. Knock your responsibilities out of the park. Dont let your ambitions distract you from excelling in your curent role. Focus on the present as much as – or more than – the future. 2. Help your boss succeed Lean more toward yes than no whenever your boss asks you to help with something new. Find out what keeps your manager up at night and propose solutions to those problem 3. Seize leadership opportunities, no matter how small Raise your hand for new initiatives, especially ones that might be visible to those outside your unit. It might be something as simple as facilitating a meeting, offering to help with recruiting events, or stepping in to negotiate a conflict between peers. 4. Look for the “white space” Take on problems that others arent willing to tackle or dont even know exist. When you take on a task that no one else is willing to do, ypu make yourself stand out. 5. Dont be a jerk Focus on what your team wants to accomplish instead of putting yourself first.
