CARIBBEAN LAUNCH: IPCC AR5 REPORT OVERVIEW. WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR THE CARIBBEAN? Last night the Caribbean Community Climate Change Center (5Cs) hosted the Caribbean Launch of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC’s) Fifth Assessment Report (AR5). The public education launch was intended to raise the profile of Climate Change as a key development challenge in the Region, and to highlight the high degree of scientific certainty surrounding the predictions about our changing and variable climate. The event was held at the Frank Collymore Hall, Central Bank of Barbados, and was sponsored by the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) and Climate Development Knowledge Network (CDKN). The public education launch brought together a range of international and regional perspectives on the relevance of the findings for the region. These perspective s were shared in a series of presentations and a panel discussion that invited questions from the audience. The entire event was streamed live and tweeted via the hash-tag #CaribbeanClimate. The video coverage of last night’s public education launch of the IPCC’s Fifth Assessment Report can be seen at the link youtube/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=ri5JM3vD8ZQ. If you have any problems with this video link you can find the video on the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre’s web page at caribbeanclimate.bz/. The presentations by panelists Dr. Leonard Nurse (UWI CERMES), Pryiadarshni Rai (IFRC), and Leon Charles (UNFCCC negotiator and Lead Negotiator for AOSIS) were very interesting. Leon Charles gave one of the clearest, most concise, and interesting explanations of the SIDS climate change negotiating strategy and position that I have ever had the pleasure of listening to (the presentation starts at 1:55:00 in the video. The AR5 report offers some specific messages about the impacts of climate change on small island states - and some of its general findings on climate change adaptation and mitigation are of particular relevance to Small Island Developing States such as those in the Caribbean. The 28-page Summary for Decision Makers can be found at climatechange2013.org/images/report/WG1AR5_SPM_FINAL.pdf The CDKN has published a SIDS-specific assessment of the “The IPCC’s Fifth Assessment Report: What is in it for Small Island Developing States” which can be downloaded at cdkn.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/IPCC-AR5-Whats-in-it-for-SIDS_WEB.pdf.
