CARIBBEAN PORT OF CALL - CASTRIES, ST LUCIA. Castries is the capital city of St Lucia, a small Caribbean island off the coast of Central America. Castries is situated in a natural harbour surrounded by beautiful scenery. It is a British Commonwealth island and English is the official language spoken. Built in the 18th century, Castries is now a modern mix of new buildings and wooden houses. There are none of the original colonial houses remaining as the city has been devastated many times by earthquakes, hurricanes and fires. A lively market takes place each day where local produce and crafts are sold. There are also nearby duty free shopping malls as well as bars, cafes and restaurants. Remains can be seen of the islands defences which reflect the history of the islands previous occupiers. On the island, you can be as relaxed or as active as you want, from zip lining to horse-riding, snorkelling, Segway tours and whale and dolphin watching.
