CARNEGIE CONCERT JAZZ SERIES Fall 2013 SCHEDULE: Friday, September 27, 7:30 pm Peter Brendler/John Abercrombie Duo Up and coming bassist Peter Brendler appears with guitar legend John Abercrombie to celebrate the release of their new CD on Steeplechase Records. Over a career spanning more than 40 years and nearly 50 albums, John Abercrombie has established himself as one the masters of jazz guitar. A dedicated experimenter, constantly stretching the boundaries of jazz sonority and harmony, John has appeared with jazz greats such as Jack DeJohnette, McCoy Tyner, Gil Evans, Joe Lovano, and Bob Mintzer, among many others. Friday, October 11, 7:30 pm The Houston Person Quartet with John Di Martino-piano, Matthew Parrish-bass, & Chip White-drums Tenor Saxophone icon Houston Person plays in the lush, soulful, bluesy tenor tradition of Gene Ammons, Eddie Harris, and Stanley Turrentine. He achieved great popularity through a long association with notable jazz vocalist Etta Jones, and has appeared with many jazz luminaries such as Ron Carter, Horace Silver, Lena Horne, and organists Charles Earland, Johnny “Hammond” Smith, and Richard ”Groove” Homes. A former Nyack resident, Houston has been a perennial favorite in Rockland County, New York City, and worldwide. Friday, October 25, 7:30 pm Maucha Adnet-vocals & Helio Alves-piano, with Special Guest Duduka Da Fonseca-perc. JAZZ SAMBA & JOBIM Individually, vocalist Maucha Adnet and pianist Helio Alves boast impressive résumés. She has collaborated with Charlie Byrd, Dori Caymmi, Eliane Elias, Gilberto Gil and Toninho Horta, and spent a decade touring and recording with Antonio Carlos Jobim. He’s partnered with an equally illustrious assortment of artists, including Yo-Yo Ma, Joe Henderson and Paquito D’Rivera. But the two Brazilians’ finest performances, spanning two decades, have been side-by-side. Drummer/percussionist Duduka Da Fonseca has long been recognized as one of the great masters of Brazilian percussion and has been instrumental in popularizing Brazilian jazz in this country. Duduka has appeared on over 200 albums and performed with artists such as Antonio Carlos Jobim, Astrud Gilberto, Gerry Mulligan, John Scofield, Wayne Shorter, Tom Harrell, Herbie Mann, Joe Henderson, Kenny Barron, Nancy Wilson, and Phil Woods amongst many others. “Duduka’s command of Brazilian and American rhythms and his ability to integrate them so seamlessly is truly innovative.” - Billy Hart. Friday, November 22, 7:30 pm Vocalist Lynn Stein Popular Rockland County vocalist Lynn Stein has long been a driving force behind the scene, supporting music and the arts in her role as Artistic Director of the Rockland Center for the Arts. We welcome this opportunity for Lynn to present her unique vocal stylings, accompanied by piano and bass, in this special appearance at the Nyack Library Carnegie Concert Jazz Series. Friday, December 6, 7:30 pm Don Friedman – Solo Piano Don Friedman is one of the all time great masters of the modern jazz piano, and has been featured with most of the major figures in jazz since the 1960s, including Joe Henderson, Clark Terry, Lee Konitz, Herbie Mann, Charles Lloyd, Elvin Jones, Attila Zoller, and countless others. He is a true “musician’s musician”, and continues to draw critical acclaim for his music and respect from is peers. He has been praised for his lyrical style, creativity, and technical virtuosity.
