CAROLINA - TENNESSEE: ONE MISSED TACKLE -- I was not there, and I am oh so grateful for that. I watched it from a comfortable chair in a warm room. It never looked real good, and I certainly didnt feel confident even when we were14 points ahead with a few minutes left. The norm now for us in that situation is to find a way to lose. Weve gotten good at that, and in fact we are a perfect 4 for 4. In those four games if we make only one of those missed tackles on any 3rd down it easily could have meant a 14 point swing. Thats right. So now you do the calculations. Take away seven points from the opponent who would have had to punt, and we receive the punt and go score a field goal or touchdown. You got it. We have lost 4 by 1, 3, 7 and 7. Just 4 more tackles, and we could have four more wins. Just four stops and we have a shot at a touch down or field goal. One tackle, one stop on third down, and we win the Auburn, Kentucky, Missouri, and Tennessee games. Most games come down to a handful of plays that decide the outcome. A team never knows when one of those critical plays is about to happen so every play is oh so important and can be the difference in winning or losing. But we do know now, one more tackle in each of those games and we are now 8 and 1 and in the top 10. You say well why not. Our defense is not that bad. No, it is HORRIBLE. We all have tried to look at it and find some positives, but there just are not any. We dont get a good forward push, there is very little pass rush, certainly poor coverage on receivers, and good tackling is non existent. Our Coach says we lack sufficient effort. Thatll sure do it. Poor effort equals poor results. More important, acceptance of poor effort eventually turns in to lower team spirit and unity. The hard working players expect the coaches to get hard work out of all the participants. The fans assume that is happening 24 - 7. So what do we do about it?our coach says. He asked the fans for suggestions. Coach, I am now thinking maybe you dont have someone in charge of tackling. If you dont then get somebody. If you do already have someone in charge of tackling then its time for you to get somebody different. Tackling, Coach, that is your answer to the defense.We are scoring enough points to win except the other team scores more. That is not the whole story. Offense has its problems, and I hate to say this but some of the problems start with decision making. Tonight we are 14 points ahead in a large part to Coopers offensive skills in the wildcat. Why. I say it louder to you, Coach. WHY not put Cooper back there and Run. Run straight ahead and slowly move the chains. Use him and run that sweep option with Davis, Wilds, or Williams. We are loaded there. No, instead, we opt to air it out on first down and then it is three and out. Hate to say it but some problems are coming from the top down. It is time to switch to a different mode. Maybe it is time for wait til next year mode, Get us a running quarterback who will be here. He might even run some this year. Lets wait til next year with younger players. If you keep doing what you are doing we can expect the same results. Please, Coach, change something. Please.
