CASH FOR ACCESS | Former Fitzgerald Inquiry special counsel Gary Crooke, who helped jail Queensland government ministers over corruption in the 1980s, described fundraising by charging for access to ministers as a cancer that kept coming back in politics and a betrayal of a fundamental public trust. SPP: Here is our current policy... TRANSPARENT GOVERNANCE POLICY Australia should develop greater transparency regarding political donations and lobbying. POLICY METHODS In part, this can be achieved as follows: - Australia should cap political donations and contributions. - Australia should adopt more transparent reporting of lobbying and all financial contributions, including the requirement for politicians to declare any time they spend with registered lobbyists. - Australia should ban ex-politicians and senior public servants from employment with registered lobbying organisations for at least two years from the date of leaving office. - Australia should remove the four per cent threshold for public funding of political parties and independents, so that all candidates attract the same public funding level per vote.
