CASTING TARANSKY BAMBOO SPEY ROD Few years ago Nick Taransky received an order to build a bamboo spey rod. Nick decided to built a prototype rod first before he built a real one for his customer. I felt honoured and privileged when he asked me to field test and evaluate his prototype bamboo spey rod and asked my input before building the final one. It was 3 pieces 12ft 6wt with traditional splice joints. Casting the bamboo spey rod was a subliminal experience. Unlike a graphite rod, bamboo rods are very soft. It bends very deep. As you can see in the photo how deep the rod bends, I can feel it right through the grip area. I have to slow down the casting tempo and open up the casting arc considerably. It was fun putting the splice joint together and worked beautifully as well. Nick made two different versions of the middle section, a hollow and a solid one. Although a bit heavier, the solid one worked much better - less vibration. I tested the rod with Scandi, Compact Scandi and Skagit lines. The rod casted all of these lines beautifully. youtu.be/14h418S-ZOw
