CATURRA RECOGNISED FOR QUALITY, EXCELLENCE AND DISTINCTION! At a glamorous gala dinner on Tuesday, 22 October 2013 at The Wanderers Club in Johannesburg, Caturra walked away as a finalist in the Beverage Category at the Institute of Packaging South Africa (IPSA) Gold Pack Award ceremony. Caturra was entered by Colpak for its revolutionary home compostable packaging launched in December 2012. Steven Broekhuysen, Chief Executive Officer of Colpak has this to say after receiving the accolade: “We are very proud to be associated with Caturra and this unique offering in South Africa. We firmly believe that home compostable packaging is the most environmental friendly and sustainable form of packaging. Colpak, together with partners like Caturra are determined to grow this market in the country.” The IPSA Gold Pack Awards are held annually and it stands for packaging excellence in all packaging formats, such as paper, plastic, paper and metal. Bill Marshall, representative of IPSA and organiser of the event says: “Caturra, as a finalist automatically qualified them to enter the WPO WorldStar competition. Since its inception in 1973, the IPSA GOLD PACK Awards have grown into a competition of considerable importance and prestige. The IPSA GOLD PACK Awards is an exciting platform to showcase and celebrate the South African packaging industry. This is an incredible endorsement for Caturra.” When embarking on this venture to seek a more sustainable solution for his packaging, Managing Director of Caturra, Klaus Becker, a distributor with a vision for a greener South Africa, sought the expertise from a UK based company Innovia Films, to make their packaging match their stringent coffee ethics. Working in collaboration with Colpak, new coffee packs were developed for Caturra. These packs were specifically developed using NatureFlex™ renewable compostable films in their construction. After an intensive 2 years of development, the cellulose NatureFlex™ compostable films are now being used highlighting Caturra ‘s commitment to high quality standards and sustainability philosophy. The bags are home compostable since the primary raw material – wood pulp – disintegrates into carbon dioxide, water, mineral salts and new biomass. There are many innovative ways in which compostable coffee bags and coffee grounds can be re-used, for instance to speed up the process of creating rich earth when added to a compost heap. Becker commented after receiving the award: “Our vision and hard work has finally paid off! We are incredibly proud of this recognition and it only serves to reinforce that Caturra is always first when it comes to being innovative as a leader in the coffee industry in South Africa. Our commitment to consumers nationally and internationally, will always involve sustainable business practices ensuring that they are assured of ethical consumerism.” For more information, contact the Caturra head office in Cape Town on 021 593 1199 or visit caturra-coffee.
