CAUSALITY, KARMA, and the PRINCIPLE OF CAUSE AND EFFECT ❦ - TopicsExpress

CAUSALITY, KARMA, and the PRINCIPLE OF CAUSE AND EFFECT ❦ CAUSALITY ❦ Causality (also referred to as causation) is the relation between an event (the cause) and a second event (the effect), where the second event is understood as a consequence of the first. In common usage, causality is also the relation between a set of factors (causes) and a phenomenon (the effect). Anything that affects an effect is a factor of that effect. A direct factor is a factor that affects an effect directly, that is, without any intervening factors. (Intervening factors are sometimes called intermediate factors.) The connection between a cause(s) and an effect in this way can also be referred to as a causal nexus. Though the causes and effects are typically related to changes or events, candidates include objects, processes, properties, variables, facts, and states of affairs; characterizing the causal relation can be the subject of much debate. The philosophical treatment on the subject of causality extends over millennia. In the Western philosophical tradition, discussion stretches back at least to Aristotle, and the topic remains a staple in contemporary philosophy. ~ Wikipedia ❦ KARMA ❦ Karma is the law of moral causation. The theory of Karma is a fundamental doctrine in Buddhism. This belief was prevalent in India before the advent of the Buddha. Nevertheless, it was the Buddha who explained and formulated this doctrine in the complete form in which we have it today. The Pali term Karma literally means action or doing. Any kind of intentional action whether mental, verbal, or physical, is regarded as Karma. It covers all that is included in the phrase thought, word and deed. Generally speaking, all good and bad action constitutes Karma. In its ultimate sense Karma means all moral and immoral volition. Involuntary, unintentional or unconscious actions, though technically deeds, do not constitute Karma, because volition, the most important factor in determining Karma, is absent. The Buddha says: I declare, O Bhikkhus, that volition is Karma. Having willed one acts by body, speech, and thought. (Anguttara Nikaya) Every volitional action of individuals, save those of Buddhas and Arahants, is called Karma. The exception made in their case is because they are delivered from both good and evil; they have eradicated ignorance and craving, the roots of Karma. ~ buddhanet.net/e-learning/karma.htm#1 ❦ THE PRINCIPLE OF CAUSE AND EFFECT ❦ Every Cause has its Effect; every Effect has its Cause; everything happens according to Law; Chance is but a name for Law not recognized; there are many planes of causation, but nothing escapes the Law. — The Kybalion. This Principle embodies the fact that there is a Cause for every Effect; an Effect from every Cause. It explains that: Everything Happens according to Law; that nothing ever merely happens; that there is no such thing as Chance; that while there are various planes of Cause and Effect, the higher dominating the lower planes, still nothing ever entirely escapes the Law. The Hermetists understand the art and methods of rising above the ordinary plane of Cause and Effect, to a certain degree, and by mentally rising to a higher plane they become Causers instead of Effects. The masses of people are carried along, obedient to environment; the wills and desires of others stronger than themselves; heredity; suggestion; and other outward causes moving them about like pawns on the Chessboard of Life. But the Masters, rising to the plane above, dominate their moods, characters, qualities, and powers, as well as the environment surrounding them, and become Movers instead of pawns. They help to PLAY THE GAME OF LIFE, instead of being played and moved about by other wills and environment. They USE the Principle instead of being its tools. The Masters obey the Causation of the higher planes, but they help to RULE on their own plane. In this statement there is condensed a wealth of Hermetic knowledge — let him read who can. ~ hermetics.org/pdf/kybalion.pdf ✵ ADDITIONAL READS ✵ ✗ commonsensescience.org/pdf/articles/law_of_cause_and_effect_fos_v7n3_causality.pdf ✗ goodreads/quotes/tag/cause-and-effect ✗ princeton.edu/~achaney/tmve/wiki100k/docs/Causality_(physics).html ✗ popsci.au/science/in-new-quantum-experiment-effect-happens-before-cause ✗ philosophy.ox.ac.uk/__data/assets/pdf_file/0012/1236/Oxford_Studies.pdf ✗ yoga-philosophy/eng/karmalaw.htm
