CAUTION: Very long post that involves Stairway to Heaven But a must-see for fans of the movie ALMOST FAMOUS: I mentioned a few weeks ago that I got the extended directors cut version of ALMOST FAMOUS, which Cameron Crowe playfully calls it the Bootleg version. Dont you just love seeing one of your favorite movies (one that youve watched over and over again) and suddenly see 40 minutes of previously unreleased scenes added to it? And these particular scenes were not just throwaways that didnt make it because they werent very good. These scenes added significant character development in a character driven movie. Anyway, besides the extra 40 minutes that were edited seamlessly into this special Blu-Ray edition, there were also extras on the disc, including a mini-concert of Stillwater. But the best extra I just discovered tonight (after having this version for a couple of months now). Remember the scene where Williams older sister leaves home when she turns 18 and puts on Simon and Garfunkels America to explain why she was leaving? Well a similar scene was supposed to follow later on in the movie when William was trying to convince his mother to spend 4 days with Stillwater in L.A. to write a Rolling Stone article. In the original movie, William and his mother played the scene by themselves, without him playing any records. The scene Cameron Crowe really wanted to do was have a group scene with Williams teacher, student adviser, his sisters boyfriend, along with William and his mother. After the group at first unsuccessfully tries to persuade her, he asks her to listen to this song, as in his sisters scene, but this time the song was supposed to be Zeppelins Stairway to Heaven. Cameron could not get the rights for the music. And since he felt the scene was so important to the movie, he added this extra feature on the disc. The scenes starts playing out with audio (conversation) and then theres a cue for the viewer to put on their own copy of Stairway to Heaven and play the whole song for the rest of the scene. I was going to upload a video with the music dubbed in, but someone already did that for me (and synced it up perfectly too), except this particular clip fades after the song is over and you dont get to see the rest of the scene where Williams mother agrees to let him go. They used the same dialogue from the original scene though. And so, ALMOST FAMOUS fans, I give you the big Stairway To Heaven scene, that never made it into the movie, complete with soundtrack youtu.be/Ra9YR1ze0w0
