CAVALRY (2014) looks like good drama. Lloyd Drums review: “Calvary” is a powerful film that plays on two levels. It is the story of a priest ( a “good” priest) and the decision he must make to confirm his faith in the most profound way possible. It is also about all the good priests of the Catholic faith who didn’t want to know about or demand action regarding the child molestation issues in the Church. In still another way it asks us to think about the degree of guilt anyone should feel if they know about something that’s wrong and don’t speak out against it. Brendan Gleeson gives another brilliant performance as father James. Father James is a good priest. He is genuine in his beliefs and never hurt anyone. He was a married man with a child. When his wife died the resulting introspection led to his becoming a priest late in life. The movie opens with father James in the confessional listening to the story of a man who had been molested as a child by a Catholic priest. After telling his story the man tells Father James that he is going to kill him next Sunday…not because he is guilty of child molestation; but because he is innocent. The movie develops from there as Father James must decide to accept or reject his own personal Calvary. This is heavy stuff and not for everyone; but Catholics and non-Catholics alike who don’t mind some serious thinking should value this movie.
