CBL SUNDAY SCHOOL STUDY GUIDE 04 AUGUST 2012 TITLE: Parable of the Moneylender (Two Debtors) TEXT: Luke 7:36-47 The event: Formal dinner, by invitation only and Jesus was one of the guests Host: Simon, a religious leader; teacher of moral standards Uninvited Guest: A sinful woman wept at Jesus feet and poured costly perfume Purpose of the parable: a simple explanation for Jesus’ reaction to the woman; Simon was shocked by how Jesus responded to the woman. Simon was thinking, "If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what kind of woman this is who is touching him - that she is a sinner." (Luke 7:39) Guide Questions: 1. Compare and contrast the lives of the host and the uninvited guest in terms of knowledge, education, and money. Before the eyes of the community, who is more acceptable to God? 2. Did Simon invite Jesus as a valued guest, to learn from Him and to honor Him? Tradition during that time: a. A highly valued guest would receive water to wash the feet b. A highly valued guest would be given a polite kiss c. The host as a custom poured oil on the head of a highly valued guest 3. Why was the woman weeping? 4. What is your understanding of the words: repentance and forgiveness? The woman has one discovery that Simon has not; the woman has one treasure that she cherishes that Simon has not. The woman has discovered and cherishes God’s love. We can only give love by first receiving it. We can only love others, even our enemies and those who curse and persecute us, only when we are touched and overwhelmed by the love of Jesus Christ: 1. Ephesians 3:18-19- the depth, height and width of Jesus’ love 2. 2 Corinthians 5:14- love of Christ compels us 3. 1 John 4:19- because He first loved us 4. Ephesians 5:12- love, just as Christ loved us 5. Romans 8:38-39 who shall separate us from the love of God 6. Matthew 22:36-40 the greatest commandment Attitudes of Simon 1. Proverbs 26:12 a man wise in his own eyes 2. 2 Corinthians 10:12 comparing self to others 3. Titus 1:16 professing to know God Attitudes of the sinful, repentant woman 1. 1 Corinthians 8:1-3 love of God more than head knowledge 2. Philippians 2:3 others better than self 3. 1 Peter 1:6-9 joy inexpressible by believing, loving Jesus Christ Memory Verse: Psalm 51:17 My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise.
