CBP disagrees with ACOG stance that all home birth is unsafe. We do however hope that the physicians in SC follow the lead of their professional organization by supporting legislation that will improve access and quality for midwife led birth centers. If you have been following the media coverage of the UK out of hospital birth recommendations they reference midwife led birth units AKA birth centers. This was a quote from ACOG in the New York Times coverage of this story, “We believe that hospitals and birthing centers are the safest places for birth, safer than home,” said Dr. Jeffrey L. Ecker, the chairman of the committee on obstetrics practice for American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. ACOG, AAP, and the AMA have endorsed midwife led birth centers as a safe option for low risk women for many years. Several physicians here in SC have publicly opposed midwife birth center care going in direct opposition of what their professional organizations have endorsed. After last years consumer outrage at DHECs threat to freestanding birth centers the physicians in our state should listen to the consumers and experts and stop resisting legislative changes to remove obstacles to midwife led birth center care. If a mother choses to birth at home or in a birth center she deserves access to acute emergency care for her and her baby that is respectful and without hinderance. SC will have 3 VERY important legislative issues in 2015. Licensed midwife, birth center, and nurse practitioner and nurse midwife bills. If you are supportive of out of hospital midwife care for women in SC please stay up to date on these issues as we move forward. If you are interested in helping CBP contact lesleysingleton@charlestonbirthplace. She can put you in contact with CBP Foundation board members. Rant over (for now) thanks for listening.
