CBSE NEET to replace State PMT IMPHAL, Jun 7: The State Government has cancelled its preparation for this year’s MBBS/BDS entrance test. In place of it, medical students would be selected based on the results of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test conducted by CBSE. Speaking to media persons at his office chamber this afternoon, Government spokesman M Okendro conveyed that the Cabinet meeting held yesterday decided to cancel the MBBS/BDS entrance test already scheduled on June 9 and adopt the results of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for compiling merit list of the students aspiring to study MBBS/BDS courses. Health Services Director Dr A Bijoy who was also present at the press meet said that a number of cases were filed at the Supreme Court when the Medical Council of India (MCI) initiated a process for holding a national level eligibility test for aspiring medical students. The Supreme Court, subsequently, issued a ruling saying that medical entrance tests held before May 13 may be announced but similar entrance tests held after May 13 should not be announced without its approval. Accordingly, the State Government decided to select medical students based on the NEET results, Dr Bijoy said. Out of 5333 Manipuri candidates registered for NEET, 4950 students appeared in the test and 2956 students were declared qualified. The qualified candidates include 550 candidates belonging to general category, 167 candidates belonging to SC, 867 belonging to ST, 1376 belonging to OBC and three belonging to OBC-Physically Handicapped. Saying that CBSE is expected to give separate merit lists for the State and the nation, Dr Bijoy informed that State students would be selected to the 30 seats and 85 seats available at RIMS and JNIMS respectively for studying medical courses based on the State merit list given by CBSE. Students for central pool as well BDS students would be selected based on the same merit list. On the other hand, 5756 candidates took forms for the aborted MBBS/BDS entrance test scheduled on June 9 and Health Services collected Rs 40 lakhs as entrance fee. Out of this amount, Rs 23 lakhs have been spent in preparing for the entrance test. It is said that Health Department would refund the entrance fee to all the candidates and counselling would be done after receiving the State merit list from CBSE.
