CCHS Seeks EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Job Description Reports to: Carmel-Clay Historical Society Board of Directors Supervises: CCHS Office Assistant Status: Non-exempt POSITION SUMMARY The Executive Director plans and directs all CCHS activities and operations. She/he is responsible for the overall educational direction of the CCHS museum and archives; attends all fundraising activities and writes grants; supervises and directs the work of the office assistant; engages with recommends policies for board approval and administers approved policies; maintains ethical and legal compliance with applicable laws and regulations; endeavors to comply with established museum best practices and standards; and other duties and responsibilities as needed. Work entails the exercise of independent judgment, initiative, and discretion based on knowledge of non-profit administrative and operating policies. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Administration and Management • Promote professional museum practices to the board of directors • Work closely with the board of directors and its various committees, keeping board members appropriately briefed on major issues; and identifying need for policy development and/or changes • Oversee the physical structures of the archives and Monon Depot Museum and assure their adequate maintenance by working with the appropriate committee chair • Implement, review, and evaluate the strategic plan • Submit annual reports to the board • Ensure legal and ethical integrity and maintains accountability Supervisory Responsibilities • Responsible for hiring, training, evaluation, and terminating staff and archives/office volunteers (with board approval), providing direction, and support • Engage members and volunteers so they remain connected to the organization, feeling a valuable part of its activities and mission • Recommend appropriate financial remuneration of staff members to the board of directors, as appropriate Development/Finance • Work with the treasurer to prepare annual CCHS budget for approval by board of directors • Manage the progress of development-related projects and provide oversight. Work closely with the membership chair, endowment chair, and other special project chairs and/or committees to create and maintain campaigns. • Prepare applications for grants and administer grants received • Assist treasurer to ensure accurate and timely financial reports are given to the board • Assist the treasure, as needed, in the preparation and submission of all legally required reports to state and federal agencies Outreach • Serve as spokesperson, representing the CCHS to all its current and potential constituents, including the community, governmental agencies, and civic and private organizations • Participate in appropriate networking events sponsored by the Carmel Arts and Design District, Hamilton County Tourism, Carmel Chamber of Commerce, and other entities • Oversee and contribute to the CCHS newsletter • Build connections between the staff & volunteers in order to empower both groups within their roles and build a sense of community and success • Provide high level of professional customer service (internally & externally) at all times Exhibits and Programming • In coordination with collections volunteers, develop and implement long-range interpretive plan involving development of the collection; assist in the creation of exhibits; advise on public programs; and propose and implement other educational services • Direct the evaluation of all CCHS programs, exhibits, and events Curatorial • Support collections volunteers with regard to the acquisition, preservation, conservation, cataloging, deaccessioning, and interpretation of all collections in alignment with the CCHS mission REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, QUALIFICATIONS • At least a Bachelor’s degree and 2-3 years of experience in volunteer or non-profit management; Comparable years of direct experience considered • Strong written and oral communication skills • Experience with program evaluation • Capability in Microsoft Office and Excel; willingness to learn PastPerfect museum software and WordPress web editing software • Knowledge of methods related to the conduct of volunteer programs for non-profit organizations • Demonstrated ability to communicate, motivate, lead and relate effectively to a wide variety of individuals; excellent oral and written skills • Demonstrated customer service skills This is a part-time position of 12-15 hours per week.
