CCIO Conference “Many Languages, One Voice” - October - TopicsExpress

CCIO Conference “Many Languages, One Voice” - October 4th The purpose of this 1-day conference/workshop is to provide continuing training in a language neutral setting for medical and legal interpreters of all levels. Because pedagogical research has shown that intensive practice and feedback are optimal for the continued improvement of interpreter abilities (for both beginning and seasoned interpreters), the workshop will emphasize a hands-on approach, with minimal lecture and maximum time devoted to actual practice. Topics will include: ethics and protocol exercises, the use of technology as an aid for self-improvement in skills required for effective interpreting, training in self and peer critique, and glossary development. All materials will be covered within the context of practicing the three most commonly used modes of interpretation: simultaneous, consecutive, and sight translation. All exercises will contain terminology and concepts related to a specific set of facts that will be given to participants at the beginning of the training. Under the guidance and careful supervision of the instructors, conference attendees will research the particulars of the case, develop materials and tools that will assist them in preparing to interpret, and apply learned knowledge and skills to realistic role-play scenarios. Although participants will spend a large portion of their time practicing in language-specific break-out groups, all lectures and materials will be language-neutral so that all attendees can benefit from the collective knowledge of the group. Participants are asked to bring a recording device, compatible headphones and, if possible, a laptop computer. ccio.org
