CD Review: SUPA- Back 2 Basics Sidenote: NOT DAT BOY SUPA out of Austin.......lol I have been told and I totally agree that when an artist is putting a together a god please forbid mixtape, they should treat the project just as they would a solid CD project and promote it the same. Even though mixtapes are the accepted promotional tool these days, it is crazy how an artist can waste their lyrical skill on this platform or even put an effort of theirs on a free site like datpiff when they could be selling it as the real thing. Checking out this CD, it did take me back musically to the late 80s/early 90s....back before hip hop took a turn for the worst. Back before overused autotune, monotonous tags over leased beats and when artists focused on lyrics instead of just rapping words over a well liked beat. In this adventure, Supa did what the title suggests, he takes you Back 2 Basics. Although I couldnt really get into the songs until I heard song number 5, which was All I Got, it probably was because I had to get used to this mixtape sounding closer to a REAL CD rather than a mixtape. After All I Got, which is my pick hit on the CD, it just gets better. I also really liked You, Soul Music and Ima Do Me. Lyrically, I grasped the fact that maybe he took a lighter approach to the writing because of his concept of going back, and he did keep it respectful as he always does. If he ever curses, which I didnt hear, I am sure it will be for a purpose, and not just to rattle off syllables to fill up beat space like some artists do these days. Overall, I felt to be more impressed with his vocals from the Whos That CD from a couple of years ago, when I first met him in East Texas. But that doesnt take away from what he has done here on this one. I just wish artists would stop promoting themselves as less than what they really are......like putting their good music up for free on datpiff.
