CDC DIRECTOR FRIEDMAN SUGGESTS UK DO MORE TO HELP SIERRA LEONE AS EBOLA CASES INCREASE IN THE EBOLA REBUBLICS PATIENT SUMMARY as of November 14. Total No. of Cases = 15,145, up 732 Total No. of Deaths = 5, 420 up 243 HEALTHCARE WORKERS SUMMARY Infected: 584 Deaths: 329**** ****3 more doctors died this week. 1 each in the USA, Mali and SL. plus one doctor infected in SL (Dr. Felix Baez of Cuba). >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> The Director of the US Center for Disease Control in Atlanta, Ga, Dr. Thomas R. Friedman, has politely suggested that because Sierra Leones (SL) efforts to stop the Ebola virus disease (EVD) is weeks behind the Liberian situation, the United Kingdom might consider stepping up its efforts to beat EVD in SL. Estimated new Ebola cases is between 1,000 to 2,000 per week with most of those cases in SL, Guinea and Liberia -- in that order. From Friday to Sunday of last week alone, November 14-16, there were 533 new Ebola cases in SL, with 63 deaths. In Liberia, total news cases were substantially under 100 for the entire week. Also, Liberia has excess Ebola Treatment Center beds (ETCBs), built in quick order by 3,000 troops of US Army, while SL is suffering a severe shortages of ETCBs. Elements of Britains 750 troops in SL completed one 92-bed Ebola Treatment Center (ETC) in Kerry Town over 2 weeks ago at the far Southeast end of the Western (Capital) Area. There are, however, less than 2 dozen Ebola patients admitted because of a deliberate phased-in admission process designed to avoid the danger of infecting the healthcare staff there. The Kerry Town ETC is under the management of a UK Charity long-established in SL. The shortage of ETCBs is so severe in SL that only 13% of Ebola-exposed persons who ought to be in quarantine are in isolation, according to a WHO statement issued in Geneva on Wednesday. This means that 83 out of 100 possible Ebola-infected persons are lodged in less than ideal circumstances in community centers and in their own homes, with some looking for food in local markets. Others are on the loose hiding from healthcare authorities. Thus, while the CDC is no longer behind its 1.4 million doomsday forecast of Ebola cases in the 3 Ebola republics by January 2015, given Liberias good progress so far, the situation in Sierra Leone still invites an exponential infection growth rate of EVD in that country. In recent days, Britain has upped her support for SL by sending 30 well-trained volunteers from its Nation Health Service to Freetown to help pursue the anti-Ebola fight.
