CELEBRATING DR. P | Elizabeth Monahan Papousek, Ph.D., age 78, died suddenly of heart attacks caused by pulmonary embolisms December 17, 2014. She is survived by her daughter, Natasha Anne Papousek (William Welsh, Jr., Ph.D.) of San Diego, CA; her brother, John (Carolyn) Monahan of Mt. Pleasant, MI; her sister, Helen (David) Herring; and several nieces and nephews. She grew up in Charlotte, NC, and graduated Central High School. Her librarian mother gave her the choice of a Coming Out Ball or college, and the rest is history. Elizabeth graduated Duke University with a B.S., the University of Iowa with an M.S. and UCLA with a Ph.D in mathematics. She taught mathematics for five years at the University of Montana in Missoula, and 41 years at Fisk University in Nashville, TN. Elizabeth was passionate about many things. First among them was a strong desire to educate, to give her students building blocks to use for future careers they may never have dreamed possible. She stayed in touch with many students, encouraging them along their way. She was also very interested in astronomy, it being the profession of her son-in-law who shared with her his firsts with Kepler activity. She was a professional photographer, developing, matting and framing her photos, and having shows at which a number sold. Her passion for gardening and rearranging her yard so her vegetables didnt flood was strong. She also spent considerable time supporting Nashville branch libraries, being a voracious reader and was passionate about her church, where a service will be held. Elizabeth donated her body to Meharry Medical School in Nashville. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will occur at the First Unitarian Church of Nashville, 1808 Woodmont Blvd., Nashville, at 11 a.m. this Saturday, 20 December 2014.
