CELEBRATORY MARCH: today, Friday, 7th June, at 12:30 we shall gather at the West campus library (law) lawns and march to the Great Hall Join us as we celebrate our victory! STATEMENT BY THE WITS WORKERS SOLIDARITY COMMITTEE The Wits Workers Solidarity Committee welcomes the agreement by the University and shortlisted service providers to employ ALL workers currently employed by the current service providers. This agreement was communicated this morning in a statement issued by the Office of the Deputy Vice Chancellor: Finance and Operations. It follows a decision yesterday by Senate to support our demand that workers must keep their jobs. Our campaign and especially the demonstration yesterday clearly had an impact. We are hopeful that the University will continue to commit itself to the principles of justice, equity and humanity. The WSC would like to thank all workers, staff, and students who took a principled stance and joined black outsourced workers to mobilize and defend their livelihoods on our campus. We stress that ensuring the job security of all workers is fundamental to protecting the dignity of every member of the Wits community. The situation that the university community faced this week is further proof that outsourcing must end. We have faith that the University will take the view that putting an end to outsourcing is the logical next step if we are to ensure not only the quality of service provision on our campus, but the moral integrity of our University community as well. Aluta continua... Amandla! Wits Workers Solidarity Committee
