CHAD ( 46.9% NON MUSLIM ) The most recent overall information for Chads religious makeup seems to be the 1993 census which found that Muslims made up 53.1%, Catholics 20.1%, Protestants 14.2%, animists 7.3%, others 0.5%, unknowns 1.7%, and atheists 3.1% of the population.[1] However according to the Pew research center in 2010, 55.7% of the population of Chad is Muslim.[2] The vast majority of Muslims are Sunni of Maliki school of Jurisprudence. Minority of Muslims are Shia or Ahmadiyya.[3] Muslims are largely concentrated in northern and eastern Chad, and animists and Christians live primarily in southern Chad and Guéra.[4] Islam was brought in the course of the Muslim conquest of the Sudan region, in the case of Chad complete in the 11th century with the conversion of the Kanem-Bornu Empire. Christianity arrived in Chad with the French, by the end of the 19th century.[5] The constitution provides for a secular state and guarantees religious freedom.[6:
