CHAIRMAN STURLA’S POLICY POINT OF THE DAY Topic: Child Poverty According to a new report, the US has the 2nd highest child poverty rate among the world’s richest 35 nations, costing $500 billion a year in economic and educational outcomes. Compared to children from families with incomes of at least twice the poverty line, poor children completed 2 fewer years of school, earned less than half as much money, worked 451 fewer hours per year, received $826 per year more in food stamps and were 3 times as likely to have poor health. Poor males were twice as likely to get arrested and poor females were 5 times more likely to have a child out of wedlock.
