CHANGE UP!!!! Okay, we are all going to make a modification to the water allotment you are making. I want you to take your current weight and divide it in half. So, if you are 100 lbs. you are drinking 50 ounces per day, 140 is 70 ounces per day. If you are actively exercising, add another 8 ounces for each half hour of exercise you do. If this is still too much for you non-water drinkers out there, drink 8 8-ounces glasses per day and see if you can do some increasing as time passes. Also, you can count in other non-sugar drinks toward your allotment, this would be coffee, tea, seltzer, etc. What I really do not want you to count toward your allotment are thirst stealers like soda (even diet/calorie free) or artificially sweetened drinks. Now, that being said there was the question of too much water and sodium. Here is some information I found on that Can You Drink Too Much Water? Its rare, but yes. As much as you need water, it is possible to get too much. Having too much water in your system in relation to sodium is called hyponatremia, and its not actually from too much water as much as it is from an imbalance between water and electrolytes. When you lose water (through sweating and elimination), you lose electrolytes. If you replenish your body with just water, you dilute the electrolytes that are already running low in your system. If this occurs, your interstitial sodium levels can get so low that you can actually die. Its not extremely common, but it does happen. This is why sports drinks or electrolyte drinks are so important. I dont really care for Gatorade and other sports drinks that are loaded with artificial colors and flavorings, but a very simple thing you can do to ensure proper hydration is to add half a teaspoon of sea salt to one of your glasses of water. It really doesnt get much easier than that. One way that you can tell that you are getting proper hydration is when your urine is clear. Yes, I know I went into the bathroom talk but it applies here. All set! Change up can start right now if you need to. Just dont give up, do your best.
