CHARACTERS OF LEAGUE - David Boon Characters of League is dedicated to the Larrikins that have really taken our fancy throughout the ages. David Boon or ‘Boonie’ is a Tasmanian cricketing legend. He scored 21 Test hundreds, including seven against England. Boon made his international debut in the third final of the 1983–84 World Series Cup between Australia and the West Indies. He scored 39 from 71 balls for the losing team and had to wait almost twelve months for another opportunity. But he stuck with it and Austalia is glda he did. He scored many centruries and half centuries, but he also may (or may not) have posted the most famous half century of all on a flight to England. The Larrikin legend goes as several teamates attest to that Boonie downed 52 beers on the way to the 1989 series, breaking a record of 44 set by Doug Walters and Rod Marsh on earlier tours. Lawson says he was keeping score on airline sickbags and Jones claims to have paced Boon through 22 beers, just the other side of Singapore. Jonesy says he went upstairs and fell asleep, waking to loud applause and the announcement from the plane’s captain that Boon had reached 52. I know there are plenty of stories flying around about me that have been greatly embellished over the years, Boon said back in 2006. But that’s how it is… we played our cricket in an era where blokes learned never to let the truth get in the way of a good story. And for that he earns a guernsey as a Character of League. He averaged 55 on the tour and Australia won the series 4-0 About Larrikins Larrikins is an organisation committed to changing the climate of Australian society from one of high stress, suspicion, and fear to one of living with laughter, inclusion and joy.
