CHARGE TO MEN DAY 183 - In I Kings 2, King David is about to pass away. His son Solomon has become King over Israel. Before David dies he gives his son Solomon some final parting wisdom – “I am about to go the way of all the earth,” he said. “So be strong, act like a man, and observe what the Lord your God requires: Walk in obedience to him, and keep his decrees and commands, his laws and regulations, as written in the Law of Moses. Do this so that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you go.” For some reason, Christianity is often seen as a religion for the weak and needy. This is particular true for men. God, however, calls men to “be strong, act like a man”. A man of God should be the prototype for all men. Godly men should be strong in mind and body. More so, strong and unwavering in their faith. Our eyes should always be on the Lord. David told Solomon, “observe what the Lord your God requires”. This is a matter of determined focus. That means we have to make a conscious decision to be forward-looking using only God’s Holy Bible as our roadmap. We are to “walk in obedience to [God]”. Not running, but walking. Running has its dangers. We could trip or stumble along the way. We could miss significant things that need our attention to our left and right. Running through life is too fast. Not sitting still, but walking. Sitting still doesn’t move you off the starting line. Worse yet, you never reach the finish line. Steadily, faithfully walking with God step-by-step will get us to where we want to be in His time. Men are about breaking boundaries and conquering new ground. Sometimes, however, we push too far. It is good for men to have some absolutes. Absolutes help to anchor us to what is absolutely right and what is absolutely wrong. A world without a code of conduct to live by is a world embroiled in anarchy. So David’s advice to young Solomon seems fitting – “keep [God’s] decrees and commands, his laws and regulations.” What is result of a man who follow’s David’s charge to Solomon? David said, “Do this so that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you go.” Guys, it doesn’t get much better than that. We all want to prosper, and to be able to do that in ‘whatever we do’ and ‘wherever we go’ is awesome. The reality is that it is freely available to all of us. We simply need to accept David’s instruction to Solomon as our own. Now, let’s get this done. C2013
