CHECK out FZs marquee tent at Urbanscapes this weekend (running from 2.30pm till late) to catch three of our locally bred DJs, XEX XES Loveseat, Ethaya, Eddy Kubika and DJ Home, who hails from South London. Put together, this fantastic four have a combined DJ experience spanning decades, and an enthusiasm of a wide variety of music ranging from indie to disco, jazz and reggae. Tom Bannister, whos more widely known by his stage name, DJ Home, has been spinning for eight years, and claims that he was there at the very beginning of the Dubstep scene, attending nights like FWD and DMZ in London. What he heard there inspired him to delve into the DJ scene and start learning the craft. Oddly, DJ Home is only a DJ in the cover of darkness. In the day, he is a teacher who loves his job and gets a tonne of satisfaction helping people to learn new things. Talk about leading a double life! Next up, we have Ethaya, whom is also known simply as e around town. Hes the man behind Cloth & Clef, which serves as a venue, platform, club, boutique, and gallery located at Changkat Bukit Bintang. Ethayas spinning career started in 1995, while he was living in Honolulu, Hawaii, where his DJ housemate dragged him along the ride. e has had the privilege to perform at well-known, established venues such as Bar Amnesia (San Francisco, CA), No Black Tie, Nine @ Escott, and Signature Lounge @ The Roof. XES XES Loveseat, whose real name is Faizal Nafis started off collecting vinyls eight years ago, and what started off as just one turntable slowly grew into two to mix some of the records he has. I see myself more as a vinyl collector than a DJ, says Faizal. A man of many favourites, he plays mostly disco and house when performing at clubs, but is currently into African music like Highlife (ethnic music from West Africa), where some really good edits have been coming from recently. What can we expect from XES XES Loveseat in the coming months? Well, he has just started something which he dubs Mister Moonlight – a collaboration with friends held in an open space nightlife spot at Changkat Bukit Bintang. Playing strictly disco and grooves, its unlike conventional venues that play mostly louder and harder music. Eddy Faizal Zainal, who is also known as Kubika, started his DJ career as a modest hobbyist who broke out into the main room and won the title of the Malaysian Juice DJ Quest in 2009. To make things sweeter, he was also awarded the Favourite DJ award that same night. To date, Kubika has had gigs at Zouk, Frangipani, Cloth & Clef, Telawi Street Bistro, Laundry, and many more. Armed with a groundbreaking collection of tunes, a huge heart and a crowd of loyal fans, Kubika is excited to see where his obsession with music will take him and aspires to bring his label Electric Dreams to life. His apprenticeship with Zouk under the guidance of Terence C is also another exciting collaboration. Kubika believes in making a real contribution to the Malaysian dance music scene as well as worldwide.
