CHEMISTRY Dedicated to my chemistry classes, fall ’06, Community College of Denver Yes, sometimes she’s drier than the silicon dioxide Of the Sahara Desert, with orbitals, reactants, And those other concepts that require An overdose of glucose and phosphorous In the neurons to understand or even enjoy it. Yes, sometimes she’s a real witch, you think You have cornered with all the examples memorized, The textbook as your sword, The periodic table as your shiny shield, And yet she comes like a bull dog and destroys The illusion of the “A” grade And you feel only drinking Ethanol is left to you. Yes, she can be as puzzling as a carnival illusionist: Tricks of silicon chips, of lights made of seven colors, The hot and dangerous love affair Of water with sulfuric acid And in that climatic moment You stop being the grown-up You’ve pretended to be and are hypnotized By the wonders of Nature. Yes, she can have many facets To those who dare Step into her magical realm She never asks you to love her She only asks you to let The powers of your brain The brute iron of your will Be forged into steel She whispers her wavelength: As you learn from me You’ll never be the same Knock at my door and I’ll be Of your brain the flame!
