CHESANING — Peyton Nichols scored two second half goals to complete a hat trick and Ovid-Elsie overcame a slow start to beat Chesaning 6-0 Monday in Chesaning. With the win, the Marauders (7-1-1, 1-0 Tri-Valley Conference Central) moved within one victory of matching their win total from 2012, when the team went 8-9-3. Austin Bisson netted two goals and Avery McGroarty also scored for Ovid-Elsie, which led 2-0 at halftime. “I got into them a little bit at halftime and told them that they weren’t playing Marauder soccer,” O-E coach Chris Parker said. “They were not possessing the ball, they were not passing the ball like they should and they weren’t finishing. Second half they came out, we possessed, we worked the ball around — 30 seconds into the second half we were able to put one away just due to our passing.” Eric Mark kept things close in the first half for the Indians with some acrobatic saves, making 11 stops total. Mark came out the game with a thumb injury and was replaced by Jared Weisenberger, who made nine saves despite not having played many games in goal. “Our goalie got hurt, we don’t really have anyone else that plays goalie, so we put Jared in as goalie,” Chesaning coach Cindy Weisenberger said. “Other than that, Ovid-Elsie’s a good team, they’re a very physical team.” Jared Weisenberger said it was a big learning curve for him taking over the goalkeeping duties in the second half. “I haven’t played goalie in a long time; our main goalie is suffering from his thumb so he did not want to play anymore,” he said. “I felt I played good on the field in the first half, goal wasn’t so great. After I settled in it wasn’t too bad.” Nichols opened the scoring in the 15th minute with a sharp angle shot that went off of Mark and into the net. Just a minute earlier, McGroarty had broken through the defense and banged a shot off the post. In the 24th minute, Bisson corralled a loose ball off a corner kick and tucked a shot into the left side past a diving Mark to make it 2-0. Chesaning had one of its better scoring opportunities with 3:55 left in the half when Jared Weisenberger broke through the defense and fired a hard shot from the top of the goal box that was stopped by Brandon Walter. Nichols scored twice in the first three minutes of the second half to put the game away. He floated a shot over a retreating Weisenberger 28 seconds in, then put home another goal in the 43rd minute. “We were playing really selfish with the ball, all of us were,” Nichols said of the first half. “We just didn’t get very many good shots on the ball. We had a good talk at the halftime and we really went out in the second half, the passing really improved, we worked the ball around a lot more and saw a lot more opportunities.” McGroarty and Bisson closed out the scoring with goals in the 59th and 72nd minutes, respectively. Andres Rego Lorca and Santiago Rull Orti had two assists each. The O-E defense did the rest, limiting the Indians (3-6, 0-2 TVC Central) to just three shots on net. Walter preserved the shutout in goal. “The defense played solid all night, Parker said. “Made some changes throughout the game, during the game, after halftime, but everybody that came in at defense played a solid game. I was real proud of them today.” Cindy Weisenberger said playing a good Ovid-Elsie team will help the Indians as they get into the thick of the conference slate. “It’s always good for these guys to play a better team,” she said. “You don’t get better playing poor teams. It’s good for them to play a team like this.”
