CHESS OLYMPIAD 4TH ROUND NEWS World Chess Olympiad, Tromso, Norway Setback for Indian teams; Azerbaijan downs France Tromso (05 Aug 14) :- In a major setbacks to the Indian ambitions, both Men and Women lose their fourth round encounters against Cuba and Serbia respectively in the ongoing World Chess Olympiad here at Tromso, Norway on Tuesday. In the men section, India rested Grandmaster Parimarjan Negi on top board for the key clash of strong Cuban team. On top board GM Sethurman S P held GM Leinier Dominguez Perez, who rated over 170 points than Indian to a creditable draw with dark pieces while Adhiban had the same result against GM Yuniesky Quesada Perez. But Grandmaster Sasikiran Krishnan failed to convert an advantageous position and satisfied with half point against Grandmaster Lazaro Bruzon Batista. On the crucial fourth board, GM Isan Reynaldo Ortiz Suarez made the difference for Cuba as he outwitted GM Lalith Babu to secure narrowest win for his country. Meanwhile in the Women section, India expected to beat the lower rated Serbia but Women Grandmaster Mary Ann Gomes overlooked the clock to hand over a winning match to her Women International Master rival Marija Rakic when the match was locked at 1.5 – 1.5. The crucial mistake made the difference for India today, when their star player Dronavalli Harika earned a hard fought victory over Women Grandmaster Jovana Vojinovic on top board while Padmini rout settled for draw with Velikic Adela on fourth board. But the bad form Tania is a worrying factor for India as she lost her match against Women Grandmaster Andjelija Stojanovic. The star of the day was Azerbaijan Grandmaster Shakhriyar Mamedyarov as he outwitted French Grandmaster Maxime Vachier-Lagrave with black pieces to register a memorable win for Azeris over third seed France when other three boards ended without decisive results. Azerbaijan along with Bulgaria and Serbia are now leading the point table in the men’s section with eight match points. Bulgaria beat Romania while Serbia overcame Czech Republic with identical narrow margin of 2.5 – 1.5. In the women section, Indonesia caused a flutter as they outwitted strong Armenian team 3.5 - .5 while Iran continued their dream run as they demolished Slovakia 3.5 - .5. Top seed China and second seed Russia along with Hungary giving company to Indonesia and Iran at top of point table with perfect match points of eight. In a lighter side, this Olympiad witnessed one of the shortest match of the history as Rhoda Masiyari of Zimbabwe rated 1920 check mated her Togo rival Esse Akua Kosife in just 3 moves. Qh5# In the fifth round tomorrow, India takes on Montenegro in Open section while Women takes on pitted against Serbia and matches start at 1730 IST.
