CHIEFS MAY BE WINNING, BUT... There is winning and there is playing good football. This writer does acknowledge that winning is important, but football scholars understand that good football is and must be a priority. With this post, I know I will be labelled a hater. I watched the Chiefs match, just like a few before, with great interest and scrutiny. There is no arguing that Chiefs are the form side in the PSL, the team to beat, the unstoppable train. But their match last night left me, a staunch media scholar, very empty. I studied how Chiefs played, their pace, organisation, how they handle pressure and how they play football. It was with disbelief that I realised that in the entire duration of the match, AmaKhosi did not make over five forward passes. The only time where they tried, and the passes found a man in yellow, was the chance that Yeye Letsholonyane pushed wide off goals. Other than that, it was three or four, and then players would cheaply ans sheepishly hand over possession to a Swallows team that was not even in the match. Even the goal that Swallows scored was due to careless possession loss, failure to remain organised, leaving a few men in critical areas with the ball. Those who understand football, or sports in general, are aware that wins, as ugly as they may be, are welcome, but not all the time. I hear comparisons between Chiefs and Arsenals Invisibles. I do not think they are even 30% close, considering the kind of football they display. Sure they win matches, but where is style and how will they build on the current way of playing? This is the main reason why they ran flat last season, because there was no style and those who had to come on for the players that were drained did not know what to emulate or which way to play. Football is art people. Football is not just about running and scoring. Losers are never remembered, but good football take a while to leave the minds of those (like me) who crave it. I hope things will improve. I want them to improve.
