CHILD MARRIAGE BILL AND THE RELEASE OF ALMUSTAPHA BY ADIAMOH HAMDALAT It is with great interest, pity and sometimes outright irritation that I have followed the unfolding #childmarriage # saga. So many people have jumped on the bandwagon blindly propelled by ignorance, joblessness, religious bigotry, sentiment and often times from the sheer availability of a free platform in the form of the internet. Everybody and anybody have seen themselves as vested with the responsibility of getting people informed regardless of the source or veracity of the information gotten. Mindlessly putting up baseless news on the social media with bad grammar and badly put together words, but hey we are in a democratic era after all and everybody is empowered and even encouraged to air their views. But the prejudice that is out full blown in Nigeria in recent times is worrisome where people are ready to attack a particular issue depending often times on the religion, tribe and association/affiliation of the person talking. Unscrupulous politicians and some other evil people know this and from time to time use this as a tool to control a needlessly sensitized masses too educated to be governed and still too educated to be united, because if this was not the case why would anyone bring this kind of bill up now, why now that Al Mustapha was just released? There by successfully diverting a highly needed attention and public debate/intervention from a murder case to a controversial one like a child marriage bill (Yerima and the whole northern region in my opinion know that such a bill will not be passed but will give them the kind of diversion that will be needed for such a case as volatile and as controversial as that of the release of Almustapha to be pushed under the carpet). Southerners especially should please stop the dance of shame that they have embarked on since the child marriage news broke and they should try and find out the real motive of the drummer making music for them in this case the northern elite desperate to mask the release of Al Mustapha. Why, pray why is no one talking about that?
